The History of the Internet: From ARPANET to WWW.

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that uses the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP / IP) to serve billions of users World Wide. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope that is linked by a broad array of electronic and optical networking technologies. The origins of the Internet date back to research commissioned by the United States Federal Government in the 1960s to build robust, fault-tolerant communication. 

What is Internet?

Internet is a collection of inter-connected networks that are worldwide in scope. The internet is a tool that serves billions of users all over the world. The computer all over the world connected to each other on the Internet is termed as World Wide Web (WWW). No one owns the Internet that means it does not belong to anyone.

History of the Internet:

The History of the Internet can be traced back to the year 1968-1969. The defense Advanced Research Project Agency came up with the idea that several computers could be connected by telephone wires so they could talk to one another. A note that was written on one computer could be immediately sent to all the other computers. So they wired four computers together in a group and the group was termed as a NETWORK. The network name was DARPNET after the first letter of  the name of  the agency with NET (means network) added to the end. Soon the D was dropped and was called ARPANET, which grew over time, connected more and more computers over phones wires. As time pass, technology advanced, more and more networks were connected and wired together. These interconnected networks were called Inter-Net-Network. Today we called it the Internet.

As the commands for email and file transfer were standardized, non-technical people also learned to use the NET. Today people own a personal computer and the internet is even more popular. In the last decade, it has grown from about 5000 users to billions today with millions of new computer users coming online per year.

The first-ever email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson. the message was sent from one digital Equipment corporation DEC10 computer to another DEC10.

What was written in the Email sent by Ray Tomlinson?

Ray Tomlinson sent the number of test messages. "The messages were entirely forgettable...... Most likely the first message was QWERTYIOP or something similar."

• Tomlinson picked @ as the locator symbol in electronic addresses.
• 250 billion emails are sent out daily.
• Twitter was earlier known as TWTRR.
• 400 hours of video content is uploaded on YouTube every minute.
• There are more than 5 million apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store combined.
• 55 billion messages, 1.5 billion photos, and 1 billion videos are shared on WhatsApp every day.
